The Consequences of Getting It Wrong
When health campaigns fail to account for cultural context, the consequences can be severe. Communities may reject the message entirely, or worse, the campaign can deepen existing mistrust of health institutions. Consider how generic COVID-19 messaging missed communities that had historical reasons to distrust medical institutions. The result wasn't just ineffective communication; it was active harm.
